两个青年女子之间的表态性心理导致了其中一个被害，而凶手就是另外一位姑娘。此后，她便被囚禁一间修道院中。探长前来侦询，律师也前来调查案情。但探长并非在影片首尾出现的那个探长，律师又与被害者是同一个。所以，这桩凶杀案是否真的发生过，是否真的是这位杀手所为，都是不肯定的。需要由观众自行思考。本片是导演罗布一格里叶继《穿越欧洲的快车》后，自编自导的影片。也是他的第一部彩色影片。影片中的框架十分简单。 影片把当代的心理变态同修道院内中世纪的心理变态作了对比性描绘，从而强调问题的历史深度。但对所探讨的问题，作者并非表明自己的态度，只是客观的给予表现，在形式上，此片使用了纯化的手段，画面上的时空变得中性而抽象。对白很少，没有隐约，全凭画面，色彩和剪辑的视觉效果表达涵义。此片与《去年在马里昂巴德》有主题上的相似之处，但更少环境影响，更多接触及人的本性，因而更为抽象。在意向方面，此片与《穿越欧洲的快车》有些相像的地方，可以互为参考。把这部影片联系起来看，可以对阿兰·罗布一格里叶的思想和风格获得比较完成的了解。
