　　桥本智子（寺岛忍 饰）是一名普普通通的家庭主妇，和丈夫浩二（平田满 饰）结婚多年，两人的婚姻早已经失去了激情，一成不变的生活令智子感到窒息，想要逃离的念头无时不刻的萦绕在她的脑海之中。一次偶然中，智子邂逅了名为菅原裕一（池松壮亮 饰）的男子，年龄差足足有15岁的两人之间产生了致命的吸引力。
　　虽然裕一已经有了一个正在交往的女友里美（中村映里子 饰），但是他还是身不由己的陷入了和智子的感情旋涡之中，肉体上，精神上，他们越是奋力的挣扎，就越是陷得更深。快乐是短暂的，很快，痛苦与现实的残酷就席卷而来。

　　Joseph isn't particularly happy, although he hides it rather well. The day his brother dies, the certainty sets in that life will pass him by. To ensure this doesn't happen, one evening, he gives in to his desire.

　　Vienna, 1920. The Austro-Hungarian Empire has collapsed. Peter Perg returns home from the Great War, after seven years as a Russian POW. Vienna is experiencing the multiplicity of political, social and artistic freedom, but also the rise of anti-democratic movements, insecurity and unemployment. Peter, a former police inspector, feels like a stranger in the new Austrian Republic. While wanting to leave town, Peter is confronted with the murder of one of his former comrades. He decides to stay and instead bring the killer to justice. His ally is Dr. Theresa Körner, a determined and cool-headed forensic doctor. The two are linked not only by this case, but also by a deeper, shared history. As their investigation progresses, they realise that they are not just up against a systematic killer, who tortures his victims, but also face disapproval and intrigue from within the police force. Though determined to solve the crime, Peter, harbouring his own secrets, increasingly becomes tormented by existential questions: What is truth? What is heroism in the time of war? And all the while he fails to see the mounting danger before him.

　　A group of immigrants (Pandi, Murugan, Afsal and Kumar) are detained by the local state police, tortured and forced to admit to a crime they have no knowledge of. When all hope seems to be lost, a policeman from their hometown speaks on their behalf at the court hearing, setting them free. The policeman asks for a return favor and the boys oblige, oblivious to the ill fate that awaits them. As they unwittingly bear witness to a political treason, the system seeks to silence them, at any cost. But Pandi is determined to be heard.

　　1898年，银矿工丹尼尔·普莱恩惟尤（丹尼尔·戴·刘易斯 Daniel Day Lewis 饰）因井下作业事故摔断了腿，但他因祸得福了解到秘密的石油信息。他利用领养的孤儿HW（狄龙·弗雷泽尔 Dillon Freasier 饰）欺骗乡民赢得了石油地盘，从此飞黄腾达。但是， 成为 石油大亨的他并不快乐，在一次意外事故中H.W不幸失聪， HW对他的怨恨与日俱增，他唯一认亲的兄弟居然也是冒牌货。传教士伊莱·桑迪不过是个借宗教蛊惑人心的小人。在一次采矿事故中，丹尼尔的工人不幸丧生。正当他希望伊莱（保罗·达诺 Paul Dano 饰）施以援手时，对方羞辱了他，两人从此开始明争暗斗……

　　1997年，17岁的克拉拉和艾琳一见如故。她们溜到西西里的一座小岛上，决心在这里度过自由自在的夏天，也逃避那个她们想要忘记的事实。

　　约翰（摩里斯·切斯塔特 Morris Chestnut 饰）和劳拉（雷吉娜·赫尔 Regina Hall 饰）是一对无法生育的夫妻，多年后决定寻找年轻的代理孕妈妈安娜（洁丝·辛克莱 Jaz Sinclair 饰），他们满心欢喜地迎接她为他们诞下新生宝宝。然而年轻的安娜要的不只如此，她逐渐显露企图，闯入他们的生活，想成为婚姻中致命的第三者。

1986年，底层小人物阿鸡（黄秋生）做掉大佬及其老婆后逃离香港来到南非约翰内斯堡，被开有一家中餐馆的旧友阿坚（罗莽）收留。10年过去，阿鸡依旧是拿最低薪水却干最多活计的杂工，加上常被阿坚老婆欺负、找不到女人解决性欲，他的生活非常压抑。
　　阿坚不想从善欺黄种人的白人手里花高价购买餐馆所需的食材，和阿鸡驱车来到土著黑人开的异常恐怖的市场，回返时两人因逃避猛兽追击令汽车熄火，阿鸡得空竟奸杀一名昏迷的女黑人，感染异常恐怖的伊波拉病毒（可通过血液、精液、唾液等传播），但他因体内有该病毒的抗体没有死去。其后，阿鸡将从他身上将该病毒感染的阿坚夫妇惨杀、用他们的肉做成美味汉堡，更携该病毒来到香港欲与昔日女友阿霞（陈妙瑛）重修旧好。

　　1931年9.18事变以后，赵一曼（石联星 饰）受党委派任哈尔滨总工会书记，和老曹（张平 饰）一起领导电车厂工人反日罢工运动。不久老曹被捕后牺牲。1934年赵任中共珠河县委委员兼铁北区委书记，组织义勇军，对日寇开展游击战争。秋天，她领导的农民自卫队与王团长（王炎 饰）所率抗日部队会师。红军长征到达陕北的消息传来，部队举行庆祝联欢，不料营地被鬼子包围，赵一曼率队突围，无奈敌人越上越多，她令王团长带主力先撤，自己带部分战士掩护，终因寡不敌众，不幸被俘。抓到赵一曼，敌认为钓到了大鱼，先是严刑拷打，后又威逼利诱，赵一曼尽显共产党人英雄本色，至死都没有开囗......
　　本片获1950年第五届捷克卡罗维发利国际电影节最佳女演员奖。
