MOSS ROSE in 1947 was the first film to be made from his novels, then in 1948 two of his works were adapted for the screen, this film and THE MARK OF CAIN. The movie stars Todd as a recently widowed missionary returning to her home in England from Jamaica. During the voyage, she meets Milland, a charming though dangerous rascal who is wanted by police in connection with some unsavory dealings. Milland contracts malaria while onboard the ship and Todd nurses him back to health. In London, Todd settles into her home, taking in boarders to make ends meet. Milland arrives, moves in, and proclaims his love for her. Todd is thrilled, but it seems rather obvious that Milland is only toying with her. Milland finds some letters written to her by her friend, Fitzgerald, in which Fitzgerald reveals some of her sexual indiscretions. Since Fitzgerald is now married to the wealthy Huntley, Milland believes he can use the letters to blackmail Fitzgerald. Todd's love for Milland is so great that she goes along with the plan. Huntley, however, learns of the scheme and also uncovers details of Milland's shady past. Fearing for her lover's safety, Todd poisons Huntley, then remains silent when Fitzgerald is arrested for the murder. Milland has by now genuinely fallen in love with Todd and the two make plans to leave England. Before they can depart, one of Milland's former lovers shows up and Todd, in a jealous rage, kills Milland, then turns herself into the police.
　　This is an intriguing film, although a little on the talky side. The performances are excellent throughout, with Milland shining as the cad, the type of role in which he excelled. Though he spent most of his time making films in the US, he occasionally returned to his native England for a production and this was his first British film since FRENCH WITHOUT TEARS in 1939. Director Allen was also an Englishman who chose to work in the US, this being his first directorial effort in his homeland. This was the fourth and last time Milland and Allen would work together, their pairing having begun in 1944 with the wonderfully eerie THE UNINVITED.

　　A nightclub singer loses her husband in an automobile accident, and soon afterward witnesses the murders of two narcotics agents, and suffers a nervous breakdown. The police come to believe that all three murders are related, as they had suspected her husband was involved in a heroin smuggling ring, and now they think she may have been involved in it - especially after they find a large stash of heroin hidden in her apartment.

　　The Doll is an adaptation of the novel, The Doll (novel) by Bolesław Prus, which is regarded by many as one of the finest Polish novels ever written and, along with Pharaoh (novel), made Bolesław Prus a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. The influence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have compared the novel to Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert both were Prus's contemporaries. The movie, however, may be more compared to Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red and the Black).
　　The Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Warsaw between 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle story of three generations of Polish idealists, their psychological complications, their involvement in the history of the nineteenth century, social dramas, moral problems and the experience of tragic existence. At the same time this story describes the disintegration of social relationships and the growing separation of a society whose aristocratic elite spreads the models of vanity and idleness. In the bad air of a backward country, anti-Semitic ideas are born, valuable individuals meet obstacles on their way, and scoundrels are successful.
　　This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a series of trials and tribulations occasioned by his obsessive passion for an aristocratic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by the famous Polish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz.
　　Plot:
　　As a descendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is forced to work as a waiter at Hopfer's, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a life in science. After taking part in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at Mincel's haberdashery. Marrying the late owner's widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership with a Russian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. The enterprising Wokulski now proves a romantic at heart, falling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristocrat, Tomasz Łęcki. In his quest to win Izabela, Wokulski begins frequenting theatres and aristocratic salons and to help her financially distressed father, founds a company and sets the aristocrats up as shareholders in his business.The indolence of these aristocrats, who secure with their pensions, are too lazy to undertake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respected but his lack of family and social rank is condescended to. Because of his "help" (in secret) to Izabela's impecunious but influential father, the girl becomes aware of his affection. 　　An insane man first loves then grows to hate his neighbor, an old man whose penetrating gaze unnerves the insane man. He plans a perfect crime and executes it one night. The next day, two officers knock on the insane man's door, investigating a shriek heard in the night. The insane man invites them in, answers their questions, and submits to an examination of his eyes by one of the officers, who proclaims him innocent. The insane man invites them to stay and relax awhile, then regales them with his theories of crime. His heart begins to beat louder. Angles on the set are skewed to suggest the man's internal disarray.

　　This early 70's giallo by Umberto Lenzi is certainly among the best in his filmography and also in the whole genre. Personally I think Lenzi's best films are the funny cartoon-turned-film Kriminal, the stylish giallo Seven Blood-Stained Orchids, the explosive Napoli violenta and this. In the eighties he did plenty of film trash in form of Eaten Alive, Hitcher in the Dark or Black Demons, all of which are ripping something off and/or very dull and slow moving. Knife of Ice came when the giallo boom was at its hottest and the result is convincing.
　　Technically the film is superb, containing great cinematography in the beginning when we learn about the main character's trauma towards trains. From this point on, Lenzi shows us his ability to benefit the widescreen and, for example, the bicycle ride near the forest is genuinely beautiful! This scene also shows Lenzi's ability to build suspense, very slowly but meaningfully. After all, there aren't so many murders in the whole film, only the suspense circulating around the murderer's identity.
　　One suspect is a devil worshipper which brings new aspects to the mystery. Since the final scene takes place in a church, one can wonder if Lenzi wanted to comment on something, maybe the hypocritical morale of church and superstition. The main character (Carrol Baker) is mute which demands a lot from her face and eyes. The actress works very well, giving us a believable performance circulating around the emotions of fear and mental pain. The other actors are good, too. The finally, however, may not give too positive a sight about female sex since they all are expressed rather negatively in the film, one way or another. Still this is easily among the most noteworthy in the genre, not as bloody as the Argento films, for example, but equally suspenseful and visually also interesting.

　　伊朗电影杰作《风之棋局》（1976）今年完成修复并参与多个电影节，此前其实很少人看过！这部片在1976年曾入选德黑兰国际电影节并举行试映会，可惜放映被恶意妨碍——放映机发生故障，菲林亦遭到破坏，后来电影节评委将视频从竞赛中撤出。在没有发行商愿意投资的情况下，制片人再没将视频送到任何电影节或举办任何公开放映（据说著名影人Henri Langlois、罗塞里尼和萨耶哲雷在一些私人放映中看过，赞不绝口）。1979年伊斯兰革命后，此片更因其非伊斯兰教内容被禁。随后原底片丢失，坊间只流传一个经审查的低清VHS版本。 佚失四十多年后，导演的儿子竟在一个卖旧戏服配饰的跳蚤市场上，偶然地发现了此片的35毫米底片及声片！他立即买下并送到法国。视频由电影基金会修复，过程更由导演及其女儿亲自监督，此片的摄影师Houshang Baharlou亦亲身参与调色工序...

　　夏日江城，出租车司机吴涛（曾志伟 饰）驾车意外坠江身亡，留给妻子凡丽（蒋雯丽 饰）的除了腹中的遗腹子以及高中毕业的儿子小川（檀健次 饰）还有个受伤女乘客苏丹（莫文蔚 饰）。凡丽无法负担高额的住院费，只能接苏丹回家亲自照顾。男人的去世，让这个家弥漫着一种哀伤之气，而风尘女子苏丹的入住让这个家焕发出一丝生机。小川从迷茫少年开始变得成熟，而凡丽也渐渐摆脱了丧夫之痛。苏丹腿伤慢慢好转，凡丽为了避免苏丹和儿子的进一步接触想办法把苏丹打发走。一直对父亲的死因有怀疑的小川在两年后找到了苏丹，本来只是给她送赔偿金时却意外发现了一个秘密。

　　冬天，在某个四合院孤孤单单生活的老太（金雅琴）迎来一个来北京求学的外地女孩（宫哲）。女孩想租老太离学校很近的房子，但嫌老太要价太高，老太一脸爱住不住的表情坚决不降价，女孩无奈租了下来，两人开始磕磕绊绊争吵不休的主客生活。无论是安装电话、缴纳电话费，还是点电炉、借用电冰箱，女孩都觉得老太在处处算计她，心里十分委屈，老太看她，也是一百个不顺眼。

　　抗日战争时期，我晋西北根据地。贺龙将军领导的八路军一二0师，来了一批革命青年。贺龙将军根据青年人的特点和部队的需要，组成了一支战斗篮球队。这支球队的成立，在团结友军、促进抗日等方面起到了许多政治宴会所起不到的作用。同时，这些青年人也在团结抗日的大目标下，锻炼成长起来。从敌占区太原逃亡的青年李宽，对在紧张的战斗环境中组织球队并不热心，但当他了解到贺龙同志的深远用意之后，便成了战斗篮球队的核心人物--队长。李宽成长的经过，被从敌人封锁线把他背回驻地的女青年莫芒看在眼里，同时爱情的种子也播进了她的心田。由于战争的需要，他们都把各自的感情，深深埋在了心底。魏全斌心性高傲，与李宽恰恰相反，他积极要求成立球队，可对革命队伍里的生活一度难以适应。当他思想上极度矛盾和痛苦时，贺龙同志正确地引导他进行了艰苦的磨炼和斗争，终于使魏全斌成长为战斗篮球队的中坚。从南洋回国参加抗日的归捐国、归献国，始终牢记父母的嘱咐，把青春捐献给祖国。捐国和战斗剧社的女青年曾秀，志趣相投，一见钟情。他们在贺龙的教导下，懂得了真正的爱情和人生。献国在青春刚刚发光的时刻，献出了自己年轻的生命。球场上的痛苦与欢乐，战场上的斗争与牺牲，使这代青年成长为自觉的革命战士、新中国体育事业的骨干。球场上的"战斗"，也使广大国民党士兵的觉醒。国民党骑兵篮球队队员宦游人终于脱离了反动营垒，投身革命。党中央非常重视战斗队的成长，并给他们以宝贵的支持和荣誉。历史的车轮滚滚向前。战斗队的革命传统，仍激励着现在的青年为祖国的未来而奋斗。

　　年轻的共产党官绮云接到党组织布置的一个艰巨任务：刺杀一个代号为“灰喜鹊”的我党潜伏在汪伪特务机关内的叛徒。由于“灰喜鹊”的叛变，导致我党渔阳地区地下情报网瘫痪，地下情报组织也遭受重创，牺牲了众多同志，其中之一，就有官绮云多年未某谋面的母亲。 肩负着国仇家恨的绮云回到了位于沦陷区的家乡渔阳。在与幸存的同志取得联系后，绮云等人开展了一次次惊险卓绝的刺杀行动，为了创造更好的机会，绮云做出了巨大的牺牲，包括那一段等待二十年的儿女情长苍天不负有心人，“灰喜鹊”终于出现在绮云的枪口下，但让她吃惊的是，这个叛徒“灰喜鹊”，竟然是自己的父亲。 为了信仰，绮云毅然扣动了扳机，一声枪响，却带出了一个出乎所有人意料的真相……

　　抗日战争时期，海门的一个小镇上。自从几年前日本人从东边的海边上了岸，江海平原便落入了铁蹄之下。镖师林百顺一家因躲避鬼子杀戮而逃到了通州的濠河边上安家落户，他们与李铜匠的渔船毗邻，在白色恐怖下战战兢兢地苦熬着。濠河是一条远近闻名的千年护城河，河两岸商贾云集，店铺林立，是日本人掠夺华东物资的重镇。人们战战兢兢地过着日子。而濠河边上的女人们就更加苦不堪言了。 　　林百顺因为不愿意给日本人挑水，活活地被刺刀挑死在河边上。他女人苦的死去活来。女儿水芹没有办法，只好挎着篮子当街叫卖烧饼，好几次险些被日军侮辱，幸得妓女惠姑娘相救。惠姑娘原来是城里首屈一指的漂亮女人，因为日本人烧了她家房子，杀死她爹娘，为了买棺材葬父母，落入窑子，后因得了脏病被老鸨赶了出来，在濠河边上搭了个披棚当野鸡，日子过得很苦。可她和大家不一样，别的女孩子见了日本人就逃，她总是迎上去，因此被徽州来的女佣施家姐姐骂作下贱货。施家姐姐也是苦人家出生，新婚丈夫在南城门口因为不愿意给日本人鞠躬，被一枪打死。徽州老板见她可怜，让她到会馆当女佣，因为生性玲珑，倒也混的过去，人也渐渐势利起来。所以惠姑娘等下等人自然不在她眼里。林百顺的女人不愿意女儿抛头露面，自己去有钱人家挑水糊口，不料撞见伪保长他爹调戏女眷，老家伙先下手为强，放出风来，说百顺女人偷了他家三十块大洋。城里人一听，自然不敢再让她去挑水。娘和姐姐断了生路，十二岁的儿子狗子去日本人的纱厂做童工，一天清晨，被当作小游击队员死在日本鬼子枪下。铜匠的女人见百顺家可怜，把孤儿寡母接到他们船上住。水芹常见铜匠伯伯和一女学生来往，一直不解，直到一天晚上，女学生被鬼子追赶，躲到船上，才知道她是新四军的地下联络员，她和铜匠来往是为新四军暗地里收集废铜烂铁造子弹。保长他爸看中了水芹，提出让她抵债到家里作捂脚丫头，百顺女人当场拒绝。保长便出坏主意让日本人抓水芹去做慰安妇，危急时刻，惠姑娘挺身而出。女学生被惠姑娘感动，带人深入虎穴，救出惠姑娘。日军发现，全城搜捕，目的是想把地下党一网打尽。在铜匠和百顺女人、施家姐姐、水芹等人的帮助下，惠姑娘逃出虎口。星夜，女学生和城外的游击队联络，一船受苦受难的女人在迷雾中驶向远方，投奔已是解放区的苏北根据地……

　　1905年，黑道鬼逍堂血洗了丰城石家，但并未找到传说中袁崇焕的宝藏。24年后，天瀑寺的一茗大师又死在了鬼逍堂的手下，其俗家弟子上官云峰根据他留下的线索，一路追踪宝藏的踪迹，终于查明了自己的身世，原来他是当年石家灭门惨案里唯一的幸存者——石家的小儿子。而众人寻找的藏宝图就画在他的背上，就在此时，与上官云峰刚刚相认的亲生母亲被鬼逍堂的人抓住，威胁他交出宝藏赎人。上官云峰凭借自己的智慧找到了宝藏，但却陷入了两难境地，他到底是放弃民族大义将宝藏交给黑道，还是置母亲的安慰于不顾？

　　平京市索家坟路口发生了一件离奇的交通案件，一名男子受伤后死亡，根据目击证人的供词，刑警队长唐国栋被锁定为肇事嫌疑人，交警队事故科在刘博科长带领下展开了调查，经过进一步走访目击证人以及对事故现场进行了模拟试验，发现唐国栋系遭人诬陷，真正的肇事者是唐国栋正在侦破的案件嫌疑人。刑警队和交通队相互配合，不但找出了真正的肇事司机，还侦破了一起重大的经济犯罪案并将犯罪嫌疑人绳之以法。

　　讲述了女主人公作为向海村养牛协会奶站质检员，为了提高村子里奶品质量抵制病牛奶和未来公公发生争执的系列故事。

　　山姆在伊拉克执行期间负伤，回国后不得已接受了一份在监狱任职的工作，也因此接触到黑暗的监狱文化：贿赂守卫和毒品交易。工作中的暴力和绝望，加上在伊拉克打仗的血腥回忆让他坠入了酒精和毒品的深渊，家人也逐渐远离他。在一次监狱内部和死刑对抗中，他意识到拿着纳税人的钱看守犯人的守卫们可能像犯人一样堕落腐化。于是他被卷入到一场危险的猫鼠游戏中，一个大规模的监狱暴动迫在眉睫。
